COOL HAND LUKE Movie Italian, Belgian and Japanese movie posters (1967) - PAUL NEWMAN Movie Posters (Part 10)
Despite all his unbelievable roles, PAUL NEWMAN only received one Oscar in 1984 for his role in Scorcese’s The Color Of Money. A clear late recognition from the industry for having shunned him all those years especially in 1968 for his role as Luke in Cool Hand Luke directed by Stuart Rosenberg.
The deep south chain gang story is an impressive depiction of the late 60’s deep south racism and inhumanity and Strother Martin who plays the prison chief is one the most evil characters ever put on film. Newman excels, exuding charm, cool, terror, fear and life despite the harsh beating and egg eating! His costar George Kennedy won the Best Supporting Oscar which was well deserved but you can’t help thinking that this scene alone would have earned Newman his golden statuette
